 Punctually at midday he opened his bag and spread out his professional equipment,

बरोबर दुपारी तो आपली पिशवी उघडत असे आणि आपले व्यवसायासाठी लागणारे साहित्य मांडत असे.

which consisted of a dozen cowrie shells, a square piece of cloth with obscure mystic charts on it, and a bundle of palmyra writing.
त्या साहित्यामध्ये बारा कवड्या, गूढ ज्योतिषीय आकृत्या असलेला चौकोनी कापडाचा तुकडा आणि ताडपत्रांवरील लिखाणाचा एक गठ्ठा असे.

His forehead was resplendent with sacred ash and vermilion,
त्याचे कपाळ पवित्र राख (विभूती) आणि कुंकवाने उजळून निघालेले असे.

and his eyes sparkled with a sharp abnormal gleam

which was really an outcome of a continual searching look for customers,

The power of his eyes was considerably enhanced by their position,

This colour scheme never failed.
ही रंगसंगती कधीच निष्फळ ठरत नसे.

People were attracted to him as bees are attracted to cosmos or dahlia stalks.
जशा मधमाशा कॉसमॉस किंवा डहाळिया फुलांकडे आकर्षित होतात, तशाच लोक त्याच्याकडे आकर्षित होत असत.

He sat under the boughs of a spreading tamarind tree which flanked a path running through the Town Hall Park.
तो टाऊन हॉल पार्कमधून जाणाऱ्या रस्त्याच्या कडेला असलेल्या मोठ्या चिंचेच्या झाडाच्या फांद्याखाली बसत असे.

It was a remarkable place in many ways:
ते ठिकाण अनेक बाबतीत विलक्षण होते.

a surging crowd was always moving up and down this narrow road morning till night.
सकाळपासून रात्रीपर्यंत या अरुंद रस्त्यावर लोकांची प्रचंड गर्दी सतत ये-जा करत असे.

A variety of trades and occupations was represented all along its way:
त्या रस्त्याच्या दोन्ही बाजूंना विविध प्रकारचे व्यवसाय करणारे लोक बसलेले असत.

medicine sellers, sellers of stolen hardware and junk, magicians,
औषधे विकणारे, चोरीचा लोखंडी माल व भंगार विकणारे, जादूगार,

and, above all, an auctioneer of cheap cloth,
आणि सर्वांत महत्त्वाचा म्हणजे स्वस्त कापडाचा लिलाव करणारा व्यापारी,

who created enough din all day to attract the whole town.
जो दिवसभर इतका गोंगाट करत असे की संपूर्ण शहरातील लोक त्याच्याकडे आकर्षित होत.

Next to him in vociferousness came a vendor of fried groundnut,
मोठ्याने ओरडून ग्राहक बोलावण्यात त्याच्या खालोखाल भाजलेल्या शेंगदाण्यांचा विक्रेता होता.

who gave his ware a fancy name each day,
तो आपल्या मालाला रोज वेगवेगळे आकर्षक नाव देत असे.

calling it 'Bombay Ice-cream' one day,
एका दिवशी तो त्याला 'बॉम्बे आईस्क्रीम' म्हणत असे,

and on the next 'Delhi Almond'
दुसऱ्या दिवशी 'दिल्ली आल्मंड' म्हणत असे,

and on the third 'Raja's Delicacy', and so on and so forth,
तिसऱ्या दिवशी 'राजाची खास मेजवानी' असे नाव देत असे आणि असेच रोज नवे नाव ठेवत असे.

and people flocked to him.
आणि लोक त्याच्याकडे मोठ्या संख्येने जमत असत.

A considerable portion of this crowd dallied before the astrologer too.
या गर्दीतील बरेच लोक ज्योतिषाजवळही थांबत असत.

The astrologer transacted his business by the light of a flare
ज्योतिषी जवळच्या मशालीच्या प्रकाशात आपला व्यवसाय करत असे.

which crackled and smoked up above the groundnut heap nearby.
ती मशाल जवळच्या शेंगदाण्यांच्या ढिगाऱ्याजवळ तडतडत जळत असे आणि धूर सोडत असे.

Half the enchantment of the place was due to the fact that it did not have the benefit of municipal lighting.

The place was lit up by shop lights.

and one or two, like the astrologer's, managed without lights of their own.
आणि एखाद-दुसरे, ज्योतिष्यासारखे, स्वतःचा दिवा नसतानाही काम भागवत होते.

It was a bewildering criss-cross of light rays and moving shadows.
तेथे प्रकाशकिरण आणि हलणाऱ्या सावल्यांचे गोंधळलेले जाळे तयार झाले होते.

This suited the astrologer very well,
हे वातावरण ज्योतिष्यासाठी अतिशय अनुकूल होते.

for the simple reason that he had not the least intended to be an astrologer when he began life;
कारण साधेच होते—जीवनाची सुरुवात करताना त्याचा ज्योतिषी होण्याचा अजिबात हेतू नव्हता.

and he knew no more of what was going to happen to himself next minute.
पुढच्या क्षणी स्वतःच्या आयुष्यात काय घडणार आहे, हेही त्याला माहीत नव्हते.

He was as much a stranger to the stars as were his innocent customers.
तोही ग्रह-ताऱ्यांबद्दल आपल्या भोळ्या ग्राहकांइतकाच अनभिज्ञ होता.

Yet he said things which pleased and astonished everyone;
तरीसुद्धा तो अशा गोष्टी सांगत असे की ज्यामुळे प्रत्येकजण आनंदी आणि आश्चर्यचकित होत असे.

that was more a matter of study, practice, and shrewd guesswork.

All the same, it was as much an honest man's labour as any other,

and he deserved the wages he carried home at the end of a day.

He had left his village without previous thought or plan.

If he had continued there he would have carried on the work of his forefathers—namely tilling the land, living, marrying, and ripening in his cornfield and ancestral home.

But that was not to be.

He had to leave home without telling anyone and he could not rest till he left it behind a couple of hundred miles.
त्याला कोणालाही न सांगता घर सोडावे लागले आणि घरापासून दोनशे मैलांहून अधिक दूर जाईपर्यंत त्याला समाधान मिळाले नाही.

To a villager it is a great deal, as if an ocean flowed between.

He had a working analysis of mankind's troubles; marriage, money, and the tangles of human ties.

He charged three pies per question,
तो प्रत्येक प्रश्नासाठी तीन पाई शुल्क घेत असे.

never opened his mouth till the other had spoken for at least ten minutes,
समोरच्या व्यक्तीने किमान दहा मिनिटे बोलून झाल्याशिवाय तो स्वतः बोलत नसे.

which provided him enough stuff for a dozen answers and advises.
कारण त्या बोलण्यातून त्याला डझनभर उत्तरे आणि सल्ले देण्याइतकी माहिती मिळत असे.

When he told the person before him, gazing at his palm,
समोरच्या व्यक्तीचा हात पाहताना तो म्हणत असे,

'In many ways you are not getting the fullest results for your efforts,'
"अनेक बाबतीत तुमच्या प्रयत्नांचे तुम्हाला पूर्ण फळ मिळत नाही."

nine out of ten were disposed to agree with him.
दहा पैकी नऊ जण त्याच्या या विधानाशी सहमत होत असत.

Or he questioned:
किंवा तो विचारत असे,

'Is there any woman in your family, maybe even a distant relative, who is not well disposed towards you?'
"तुमच्या कुटुंबात किंवा दूरच्या नात्यात अशी एखादी स्त्री आहे का, जिला तुमच्याबद्दल चांगली भावना नाही?"

Or he gave an analysis of character:
किंवा तो स्वभावाचे विश्लेषण करत असे.

'Most of your troubles are due to your nature.
"तुमच्या बहुतेक अडचणी तुमच्या स्वभावामुळेच निर्माण होतात.

How can you be otherwise with Saturn where he is?
तुमच्या पत्रिकेत शनी ज्या ठिकाणी आहे, त्यामुळे वेगळे कसे होणार?

You have an impetuous nature and rough exterior.'
तुमचा स्वभाव उतावळा आहे आणि तुमचे बाह्य व्यक्तिमत्त्व कठोर वाटते."

This endeared him to their hearts immediately,
यामुळे तो लगेचच त्यांच्या मनात स्थान मिळवत असे.

for even the mildest of us loves to think that he has a forbidding exterior.
कारण अगदी शांत स्वभावाच्या माणसालाही स्वतःचे बाह्य व्यक्तिमत्त्व धाकदायक आहे असे वाटणे आवडते.

The nuts vendor blew out his flare and rose to go home.
शेंगदाणे विकणाऱ्याने आपली मशाल विझवली आणि घरी जाण्यासाठी उठला.

This was a signal for the astrologer to bundle up too,
हे पाहून ज्योतिषीलाही आपले सामान आवरण्याचा संकेत मिळाला.

since it left him in darkness except for a little shaft of green light
कारण त्यानंतर त्याच्या आजूबाजूला फक्त एका हिरव्या प्रकाशकिरणाशिवाय पूर्ण अंधार पसरला होता.

which strayed in from somewhere and touched the ground before him.
तो हिरवा प्रकाश कुठूनतरी येऊन त्याच्या समोर जमिनीवर पडत होता.

He picked up his cowrie shells and paraphernalia
त्याने आपल्या कवड्या आणि इतर सर्व साहित्य उचलले.

and was putting them back into his bag
आणि ते परत आपल्या पिशवीत ठेवत होता.

when the green shaft of light was blotted out;
तेवढ्यात तो हिरवा प्रकाश अचानक नाहीसा झाला.

he looked up and saw a man before him.
त्याने वर पाहिले तर त्याच्या समोर एक माणूस उभा होता.

He sensed a possible client and said:
त्याला वाटले की हा एक संभाव्य ग्राहक आहे, म्हणून तो म्हणाला—

"You look so careworn.
"तुम्ही खूप चिंताग्रस्त दिसता.

It will do you good to sit down for a while and chat with me."
थोडा वेळ बसून माझ्याशी बोललात तर तुम्हाला बरे वाटेल."

The other grumbled some reply vaguely.
त्या माणसाने अस्पष्टपणे काहीतरी पुटपुटले.

The astrologer pressed his invitation;
ज्योतिषीने त्याला पुन्हा आग्रह केला.

whereupon the other thrust his palm under his nose saying:
तेव्हा त्या माणसाने आपला हात त्याच्या नाकासमोर पुढे करत म्हटले—

"You call yourself an astrologer?"
"तू स्वतःला ज्योतिषी म्हणवतोस का?"

The astrologer felt challenged and said,
ज्योतिषीला हे आव्हान वाटले आणि तो म्हणाला—

tilting the other's palm towards the green shaft of light:
त्याचा हात हिरव्या प्रकाशाकडे वळवत—

"Yours is a nature..."
"तुमचा स्वभाव असा आहे की..."

"Oh, stop that," the other said,
"अरे, ते सगळं थांबव," तो माणूस म्हणाला.

"tell me something worthwhile."
"काहीतरी खरोखर महत्त्वाचं सांग."

Our friend felt piqued.
आपला ज्योतिषी दुखावला गेला.

"I charge only three pies per question,
"मी प्रत्येक प्रश्नासाठी फक्त तीन पाई घेतो.

and what you get ought to be good enough for your money."
आणि त्या पैशाच्या बदल्यात मी पुरेसा चांगला सल्ला देतो."

At this the other withdrew his arm,
हे ऐकून त्या माणसाने आपला हात मागे घेतला.

took out an anna, and flung it out to him, saying:
त्याने एक आणा काढून ज्योतिषीकडे फेकला आणि म्हणाला—

"I have some questions to ask.
"मला काही प्रश्न विचारायचे आहेत.

If I prove you are bluffing,
जर मी सिद्ध केले की तू फसवणूक करतोस,

you must return that anna to me with interest."
तर हा आणा व्याजासह मला परत करावा लागेल."

"If you find my answers satisfactory,
"जर माझी उत्तरे तुला समाधानकारक वाटली,

will you give me five rupees?"
तर तू मला पाच रुपये देशील का?"

"No."
"नाही."

"Or will you give me eight annas?"
"मग आठ आणे देशील का?"

"All right,
"ठीक आहे,

provided you give me twice as much if you are wrong,"
पण जर तू चुकीचा ठरलास तर मला त्याच्या दुप्पट रक्कम द्यावी लागेल,"

said the stranger.
असे तो अनोळखी माणूस म्हणाला.

This pact was accepted after a little further argument.
थोड्या वादानंतर हा करार मान्य करण्यात आला.

The astrologer sent up a prayer to heaven
ज्योतिषीने मनोमन देवाला प्रार्थना केली.

as the other lit a cheroot.
तेवढ्यात त्या माणसाने चिरूट पेटवली.

The astrologer caught a glimpse of his face by the matchlight.
काडीच्या उजेडात ज्योतिषीला त्याचा चेहरा क्षणभर दिसला.

There was a pause
क्षणभर शांतता पसरली.

as cars hooted on the road,
रस्त्यावर मोटारींचे हॉर्न वाजत होते.

jutka drivers swore at their horses,
जुटका (घोडागाडी) चालक आपल्या घोड्यांना शिव्या देत होते.

and the babble of the crowd agitated the semi-darkness of the park.
आणि लोकांच्या गोंधळाच्या आवाजामुळे पार्कचा अर्धवट अंधारही जिवंत झाल्यासारखा वाटत होता.

The other sat down, sucking his cheroot, puffing out, sat there ruthlessly.
तो माणूस चिरूट ओढत, धूर सोडत निश्चिंतपणे बसला.

The astrologer felt very uncomfortable.
ज्योतिषीला खूप अस्वस्थ वाटू लागले.

"Here, take your anna back.
"हे घे, तुझा आणा परत घे.

I am not used to such challenges.
मला अशा आव्हानांची सवय नाही.

It is late for me today."
आज माझ्यासाठी खूप उशीर झाला आहे."

He made preparations to bundle up.
तो आपले सामान आवरण्याची तयारी करू लागला.

The other held his wrist and said:
त्या अनोळखी माणसाने त्याचे मनगट पकडले आणि म्हणाला—

"You can't get out of it now.
"आता तू यातून सुटू शकत नाहीस.

You dragged me in while I was passing."
मी जात असताना तूच मला थांबवलेस."

The astrologer shivered in his grip;
त्याच्या घट्ट पकडीमुळे ज्योतिषी थरथर कापू लागला.

and his voice shook and became faint.
त्याचा आवाजही थरथरला आणि मंद झाला.

"Leave me today.
"आज मला जाऊ दे.

I will speak to you tomorrow."
उद्या मी तुझ्याशी बोलेन."

The other thrust his palm in his face and said:
त्या माणसाने पुन्हा आपला हात त्याच्या चेहऱ्यासमोर धरला आणि म्हणाला—

"Challenge is challenge. Go on."
"आव्हान म्हणजे आव्हान. आता पुढे बोल."

The astrologer proceeded with his throat drying up:
घसा कोरडा पडलेला असतानाही ज्योतिषी बोलू लागला—

"There is a woman..."
"एक स्त्री आहे..."

"Stop," said the other.
"थांब," तो माणूस म्हणाला.

"I don't want all that.
"मला ते सगळं ऐकायचं नाही.

Shall I succeed in my present search or not?
मी ज्या व्यक्तीचा शोध घेत आहे, त्यात मला यश मिळेल का नाही?

Answer this and go.
फक्त याचे उत्तर दे आणि निघून जा.

Otherwise I will not let you go till you disgorge all your coins."
नाहीतर तुझ्याकडचे सगळे पैसे काढून घेईपर्यंत मी तुला जाऊ देणार नाही."

The astrologer muttered a few incantations and replied:
ज्योतिषीने काही मंत्र पुटपुटले आणि उत्तर दिले—

"All right. I will speak.
"ठीक आहे. मी सांगतो.

But will you give me a rupee if what I say is convincing?
पण माझे बोलणे पटले तर तू मला एक रुपया देशील का?

Otherwise I will not open my mouth,
नाहीतर मी एक शब्दही बोलणार नाही.

and you may do what you like."
मग तुला जे करायचे असेल ते कर."

After a good deal of haggling the other agreed.
बराच घासाघीस आणि वाद झाल्यानंतर तो माणूस तयार झाला.

The astrologer said:
ज्योतिषी म्हणाला—

"You were left for dead. Am I right?"
"तुला मेलेले समजून सोडून देण्यात आले होते. बरोबर ना?"

"Ah, tell me more."
"अरे वा! पुढे सांग."

"A knife has passed through you once," said the astrologer.
"एकदा तुझ्यावर चाकूने वार झाला होता," ज्योतिषी म्हणाला.

"Good fellow!"
"शाब्बास!"

He bared his chest to show the scar.
त्याने आपल्या छातीवरील जखमेचा व्रण दाखवण्यासाठी शर्ट बाजूला केला.

"What else?"
"आणखी काय?"

"And then you were pushed into a well nearby in the field.
"त्यानंतर तुला शेताजवळच्या विहिरीत ढकलण्यात आले होते.

You were left for dead."
तुला मेलेले समजून तिथेच सोडून देण्यात आले होते."

"I should have been dead if some passer-by had not chanced to peep into the well,"
"एखाद्या वाटसरूने योगायोगाने त्या विहिरीत डोकावून पाहिले नसते तर मी नक्कीच मेलो असतो,"

exclaimed the other, overwhelmed by enthusiasm.
असे तो माणूस अत्यंत उत्साहाने उद्गारला.

"When shall I get at him?"
"तो मला कधी भेटेल?"

he asked, clenching his fist.
असे त्याने मुठ आवळत विचारले.

"In the next world," answered the astrologer.
"पुढच्या जन्मात," ज्योतिषीने उत्तर दिले.

"He died four months ago in a far-off town.
तो चार महिन्यांपूर्वी एका दूरच्या गावात मरण पावला.

You will never see him any more."
आता तुला तो कधीच दिसणार नाही."

The other groaned on hearing it.
हे ऐकून तो माणूस निराशेने उसासा टाकू लागला.

The astrologer proceeded:
ज्योतिषी पुढे म्हणाला—

"Guru Nayak."
"गुरू नायक."

"You know my name!"
"तुला माझे नावही माहीत आहे!"

the other said, taken aback.
तो आश्चर्यचकित होऊन म्हणाला.

"As I know all other things.
"जसे मला इतर सर्व गोष्टी माहीत आहेत, तसेच हेही माहीत आहे.

Guru Nayak, listen carefully to what I have to say.
गुरू नायक, मी काय सांगतो ते नीट ऐक.

Your village is two days' journey due north of this town.
तुझे गाव या शहराच्या उत्तरेला दोन दिवसांच्या प्रवासावर आहे.

Take the next train and be gone.
पुढचीच रेल्वे पकड आणि घरी निघून जा.

I see once again great danger to your life if you go away from home.
तू पुन्हा घराबाहेर पडलास तर तुझ्या जीवाला मोठा धोका आहे, असे मला दिसते.

He took out a pinch of sacred ash and held it to him.
त्याने थोडी पवित्र विभूती काढून त्याच्या हातात दिली.

"Rub it on your forehead and go home.
"ही कपाळाला लाव आणि घरी जा.

Never travel southward again,
यापुढे कधीही दक्षिणेकडे प्रवास करू नकोस.

and you will live to be a hundred."
असे केलास तर तू शंभर वर्षे जगशील.

"Why should I leave home again?" the other said reflectively.
"मी पुन्हा घर सोडून का जाऊ?" तो विचारपूर्वक म्हणाला.

"I was only going away now and then to look for him and to choke out his life if I met him."
"मी अधूनमधून फक्त त्याचा शोध घेण्यासाठी बाहेर पडत होतो, आणि तो भेटला असता तर त्याचा जीव घेतला असता."

He shook his head regretfully.
त्याने खेदाने मान हलवली.

"He has escaped my hands."
"तो माझ्या हातातून निसटला."

"I hope at least he died as he deserved."
"किमान त्याचा योग्य तसाच मृत्यू झाला असेल, अशी मला आशा आहे."

"Yes," said the astrologer.
"हो," ज्योतिषी म्हणाला.

"He was crushed under a lorry."
"तो एका लॉरीखाली चिरडला गेला."

The other looked gratified to hear it.
हे ऐकून त्या माणसाच्या चेहऱ्यावर समाधान दिसले.

The place was deserted by the time the astrologer picked up his articles and put them into his bag.
ज्योतिषीने आपले सामान गोळा करून पिशवीत ठेवले, तोपर्यंत ते ठिकाण पूर्णपणे ओस पडले होते.

The green shaft was also gone, leaving the place in darkness and silence.
हिरवा प्रकाशकिरणही नाहीसा झाला होता आणि सर्वत्र अंधार व शांतता पसरली होती.

The stranger had gone off into the night, after giving the astrologer a handful of coins.
त्या अनोळखी माणसाने ज्योतिषीला मूठभर नाणी देऊन रात्रीच्या अंधारात आपला मार्ग धरला होता.

It was nearly midnight when the astrologer reached home.
ज्योतिषी घरी पोहोचला तेव्हा जवळजवळ मध्यरात्र झाली होती.

His wife was waiting for him at the door and demanded an explanation.
त्याची पत्नी दारात त्याची वाट पाहत होती आणि उशीर का झाला याचे कारण विचारू लागली.

He flung the coins at her and said:
त्याने नाणी तिच्यासमोर टाकली आणि म्हणाला—

"Count them. One man gave all that."
"मोजून बघ. एका माणसाने इतकी सगळी रक्कम दिली."

"Twelve and a half annas," she said, counting.
